Christmas is coming

Christmas poem Screenshot 2016-12-12 at 10.31.16 AM.png

Why do bells ring ?
Why do children sing?
Christmas is a time when everyone gets presents when it's December .
Lights can bring it alive when ever it's the time. Bells of Christmas is a pleasure to everyone. Christmas is a time where you open presents and surprises you in pleasure.

Road Patrols

On Wednesday we did road patrols. Constable Teina came to talk to us
about the rules. Constable Teina took us to the pedestrian crossing so we can learn how to do patrols for next year. She said 2 volunteers to do it and I put my hand up and the other person was Bella. When we were carrying the lollipops it felt very heavy. I was the trailer and Bella was the truck in front. We had to wear these vests so the people that are driving know that we are keeping safety for our school. When we did the patrols we had to hook the wire up to the  black and white pole that was where Bella was. I was on the other side with the police lady. As soon as we started Bella was the leader and I was the follower. She had to say Signs out look right. Then she said check, then I said clear, then she said cross now. After that she said Signs in. We kept on switching being the leader and follower. What I learnt was that if a car is behind the white shaped diamond you can put the signs out. It was really fun but I was very nervous at the same time. I was shaking a bit with the lollipop but I got through it.

Breaking news

New Zealand's rocking earthquake

An earthquake hit New Zealand on the 14th November. As soon as it happened the roads were ripping apart and roofs from houses were tearing apart. Also the roads had made big gaps between and looked wrecked. The places that were badly hit were Kaikoura, Christchurch and Wellington. Some people in Auckland felt it too.  There was a tsunami near Kaikoura after the earthquake and it was 2.5 metres high.  If you're in a earthquake/tsunami alert you could save yourself -  if you had a earthquake you could hide yourself underneath something that is strong. For a tsunami you could save yourself  by going to high land but make sure it is higher than the tsunami.

Cherry Blossom Art

Last Friday we did art and made paintings of cherry blossom trees.

Step #1 We painted the background blue so it has a good setting and green for the bottom for the grass. We added some purple to the sky so it can be little bit dark.

Step #2 We practised to blow the black paint to make the branches of the trees so we didn't make mistakes. Soon we did the real one blowing the black paint on the painting with the sky and the green grass.

Step #3 At last we painted the pink, white and purple to make the petals for our blossom tree.

Angel the Hero

Once upon a time there lived a monster called Angel that lived in the Pridelands with humans. There was an evil monster that lived in the evil forest that did not like Angel. The monster didn’t like Angel because he thinks that she should be really bad.The evil monster always liked to scare the people of land and Angel because he doesn't like good people. He likes bad people. One day Angel was just having a good night sleep after the mistakes that had happened in the day. She said I'd rather go to sleep because it’s pretty late. That was the night when the evil monster came to kidnap Angel. As soon as she woke up, it was rise and shine but she didn't know were she was. Then after that she realised where she was but it was too late. The evil monster was going to put her in the fire. She tried to get the key to unlock the cage but she couldn't reach. After 10 minutes she reached for the key and she got it so she put it in the keyhole to unlock it. The plan worked and she got out. She quietly and quickly went past the evil monster. She quickly ran off to the Pridelands and got dressed in her proper clothes. After she was ready in her proper clothes, she went to make a trap for the evil monster to get him to move away from the Pridelands. As soon as the evil monster knew that Angel was gone he quickly ran to the Pridelands. As soon as Angel had finished the trap she hid until the evil monster came. She had to be quiet because the evil monster was coming. As soon he got closer to the trap Angel snapped. The evil monster went into the net at last. Angel said finally I caught him. Angel had one thing to say to him. It was sorry Mr you're going to jail .That was the day when Angel began to be a hero in her own life.

Botanical Gardens

On Thursday our whole school went to the botanical gardens to see the plants, gardens and flowers. I could hear the  birds chirping and the water dripping from the fountain. I could smell flowers and roses that smelt like perfume. When I smelt the magnolia flower, it smelt like pollen inside the magnolia. I felt good when we got there but then when we walked alot I got very tired of walking but as soon as we got to the bus I said " Finally I can sit!" My favourite garden was the spring blossom valley because the blossoms smelled so beautiful. My favourite plant is an edible plant because I learnt that the fruit and vegetables in the edible garden glow with health and vitality.

My favourite and the best sculpture was the that it looks like a pineapple with lots of shovels on it.My favourite part of the day was that when we went to the rose garden and smelt the rose’s
Because the rose’s smell like perfume as well.

Henry The Hero

Henry the Hero has been asked to talk to us about how reading is a better life, what he came to talk about was this. One day he went with his mum to the mall she saw her friend and said hey hey you I want to talk to you and then after two hours later Henry was so bored so he went to the library. When he went there he read a book and there was someone being noisy and he went looking for that person then he saw a lady with long black hair, brown big eyes and big chu-chu lips. Then he started to laugh. Then we laughed hard out, he couldn't believe his eyes and he couldn't say anything to her so he just went and cried for 7 day 14 hours 21 minutes and 10 sec. After three years later Henry had grown up and went to the library again. He said there she was. He said that he wanted to ask a question and  the girl said yes anything. Then Henry said yes can I have that book please then the lady got angry and walked off. Henry said that by reading books he changed his life.

Financial literacy

Two teachers named Nikki and Sigred told Room 10 about financial literacy. What is financial literacy? It is about saving money. Saving money is buying things that you need for yourself and what is good. There was a poster that was talking about reducing expenses. A girl was talking about what she needs and what she does not need and we had to sort out what was her expenses and what things she did not need. What is financial responsibility? It is being a good borrower. What is identity? It is the government and non-government things, like birth certificate, work card, passport, driver's licence, that tell who we are. My favourite part I learnt about was how to save money so I can achieve more when I am older.

Checking out Vector Arena!

On Tuesday we went to Vector Arena on the bus. When we got there, first of all we did a quiz and we can win a  prize at the end. The first question was when was Vector Arena built? I knew the answer was 2007. The we went around the arena to look at the dressing rooms of some famous singers, like Beyonce, Lorde, Katy Perry and Jessie J. The first room we went to see was Beyonce’s. We went and saw the purple lights and purple ground. It was really exciting to see Beyonce’s dressing room. It was like a dream come true. Next we went to this room that had red lights where there was a bar and there was a gaint shoe. The shoe was very creative because it had a made up dragon on it. My favourite part was when I plugged the charger into the electric car.

Snag Golf

Last Thursday we went to snag golf after morning tea. We had to train with a coach named Jae to know the rules/lessons so we knew what to do. We had to buddy up with groups of three. My buddies were Julianne and Kuini. First we had to roll the ball to the target that was made out of Velcro. It was a very sticky mat so the tennis ball could attach to the Velcro. Second we had to roll the ball into the hula hoop and the Velcro was the protector. Thirdly we had to hit the ball in the target with the golf club. My favourite part was when we all tried as a group to try and win the competition.

A celebration for parents!

Last Thursday I came after school and signed the contract for my chrome book to take home every Monday and Wednesday. First when I came in I was excited about taking my chrome book home. We did the survey for the parents, all sisters and brothers. After that me and my sister looked at my screen cast  for the parent meeting. She thought it was really good because she asked me some questions about it. We were looking forward to looking at the the class blog because we have been doing some really good stuff in room 10 like the professional chefs that made our lunch and the doctor that came to talk about healthy eating. We looked at my drive to see where I put things in my folders, like my infographic. Also we looked at my other folders to see what I was doing. Then we checked the class site for some exciting links. It was really fun getting my chrome book and taking it home!

Profile 2016

Kia ora! My name is Mary. I am ten years old and my culture is Cook Island.  I go to Ruapotaka School and I am in Room 10.  I am a Year 6 student and my class teacher is Mrs Buchanan.

I am learning to be a Cybersmart expert in Room 10 by cooperating with others. My favourite subjects are reading and maths. I like maths because we work with two buddies and share our ideas when we do our problem solving. I like reading because I get to read and share ideas with my buddy that I'm working with. My goals are to learn my 4 and 6 times tables and to get A-grades for homework every week. I like to play all kinds of sports but my favourite is netball.

I admire my family because they take care of me. When I grow up, I want to be a superstar like Maria Tutaia.

Fern flag or current flag?

It has been hard work talking about changing the flag lately. It was very difficult deciding which flag but most of us chose the current flag because it might cost more money to change our passports and driving licences. 1 quarter of Room 10 voted for the fern flag and 3 quarters voted for the current flag. Then it was the final day when John Key had to choose which flag was the best. The current flag won for our country.

Sport at St Kents

At St Kents last week we were playing games like turbo touch. Turbo touch is like you can pass the ball forward and backwards and get intercepts. The next game was long ball. Long ball is like you kick the ball as far as you can and then you have to run to the square. Then when the next person runs, you have to run home. The next game was tag with the noodles. It is like there are people tagging the people who are running home and that was a lot of fun. At St Kents it was a lot of fun.

Swimming with the instuctors

On the last day of swimming with the instructors, they tested us to see where we were at. Through swimming we were doing some amazing practice with the instructors. Then it came to the end where we had to do  a challenge who had to go the longest without touching the ground. When I went in the pool it was  cold, cool and chilly and then I had to duck under the water then we starting the challenge I had 25 meters going down and back it was cool and it was the best time of my life.
